NSW: Australia Post defends its sick leave policy

Australia Post has defended its policy of forcing employees onto sick leave for nonwork-related illness.

The organisation has also rejected a claim by the Communications, Electrical and PlumbingUnion that it's taking industrial action against 39 employees it had directed on to sickleave.

The union has taken Australia Post to the Australian Industrial Relations Commissionover alleged unlawful industrial action against postal workers concerning non work-relatedinjuries and health issues.

The AIRC has adjourned the matter, after Australia Post agreed to a union request thatthe 39 employees be guaranteed paid sick leave until the matter is resolved.

Australia Post spokesman GARY HIGHLAND says the matter will take some time to resolveand it's only fair that paid sick leave is extended to affected staff until the Commissionmakes its ruling.

The AIRC hearing will resume in September.
